Stimulus Deja Vu

Here we go again! Obama wants to stimulate the economy and create jobs with…yep you guessed it, STIMULUS! And we know how well THAT worked in 2009! Those Shovel Ready jobs weren’t as shovel ready as they expected, we found out two years later, although, those of us on the Right knew they weren’t, but hey, why listen to us, we only wanted jobs created by the private sector, not TAX dollars.

And that’s what Obama is proposing now…or so the “leaked” info says.

According to the information “leaked” to the press, once President Obama returns to the White House after his vacation, he’s going to propose targeted tax breaks for companies that hire, mortgage relief for struggling homeowners and infrastructure deals…um didn’t we do that in 2009? Wasn’t that part of the almost one trillion in so-called stimulus?

This is déjà vu! And it’s going to be déjà vu all over again with results. We NEED private sector jobs, NOT jobs created by tax dollars. Even Jan Schakowsky’s (D-ILL) plan to create 2.2 million School Improvement, Parks Improvement and Rehab and Weatherize jobs over two years are STILL tax dollars (even if they are millionaire tax dollars) and it’s NOT cheaper, as she claims. It’s cheaper to pay unemployment. Furthermore, her calculation of $227 Billion is most likely under calculated, as we’ve found over the decades, government always UNDER estimates!

Besides, spending money we do NOT have to supposedly stimulate our economy isn’t economically smart. These so-called Shovel Ready or School Improvement Corps jobs are just fancy names for Tax Payer Temporary jobs. When the bridges, parks, schools and homes are fixed, the jobs are DONE and those people will be out of work yet again and back on the unemployment line. We need the private sector to create jobs which will sustain their employees for the long-haul, not just six months or a year. We need long-term permanent jobs and those can be found in the private sector.

Government incentives aren’t the answer, as they end up costing us tax payers. We need growth, as both sides agree, but the conundrum is HOW we get that growth. The Left says the stimulus from 2009 wasn’t big enough. I have to respectfully disagree. Had we spent two trillion dollars and shoveled more money into the system, those Shovel Ready jobs still would’ve ended, thus driving those people back to the unemployment lines, albeit a little later, but there nonetheless.

The only way the private sector is going to hire is if they have sound reason. Right now business owners aren’t feeling secure. They are hoarding trillions of dollars because they don’t trust this administration with things like Obamacare, Dodd-Frank, the threat of higher taxes and more and more regulations being imposed which impedes them and their cost to do business, thus costing them money, hence reducing their bottom line. Let’s face it, there is no company open to be charitable or noble, except charitable associations! Businesses are in it for the bottom line, i.e. PROFIT!

They are the engines of our economy and they need oiled, not demonized and certainly not taxed to the hilt. Besides, our officials should be balancing our budget, not implementing more and more regulations which impede business or drive it off our shores! They should also be going after fraud and abuse within the existing programs and cutting everything that is unnecessary, but they are busy vilifying the other side, STILL pointing fingers and casting blame, and frivolously spending our money. None of which will get us off the edge of the cliff.

I’m sick and tired of politics as usual and really wish we’d get people who would implement some real change. I want to stay optimistic, but quite frankly, I’m beginning to lose faith.

  1. I'm there with you Pamela! We do not need a repeat of the past screwups...

  2. Very poignant and valid analysis. Our politicians need your insights. Given the current crop of conservatives I'm not optimistic this will happen anytime soon.

  3. With no money in the economy there is no demand. Government had no choice but to do the stimulus.

it did stave off a depression despite what the right tells us.

The answer is tax incentives for investment, research and development, and yes, hiring.

At least I hope that's the answer. the sad reality is I don't think anyone really has a clue what to as we are now so spoiled by government goodies and low rates.

Wall St. is begging for another stimulus. They got their wish with the continued low fed rate through 2013. So before you and Les get too worked up about us lefties and Obama wanting more stimulus, remember it is Wall Streeters that want it most. The enemy is not me and working Americans. It's the wealthy Wall Streeters who wield the power, then spin programs that benefit them while screwing us as evil liberalism.

You're being played RN and Pamela.

  4. Oh. I need to add that we of course do need a new tax code that is simple and consistent.

When I had my business a different guy from the state would show up at my shows with a different set of rules I had to follow.

  5. Both the president's and Rep Schakowsky's plans sound economically smart to me. I support them. Don't worry though... the Republicans will shoot down any legislation that places us on a path to economic recovery. Remember that making sure Obama is a one-term president is their primary goal. And they're willing to sacrifice the economy to accomplish it.

They are hoarding trillions of dollars because they don’t trust this administration with things like Obamacare, Dodd-Frank...

Neither of these pieces of legislation went far enough. ObamaCare should have been single-payer and Dodd-Frank should have been a reinstatement of Glass-Steagall and regulation of
OTC derivatives and credit default swaps.

Government jobs do end, but before they do the private sector hires workers to meet the demand created when the government workers spend their earnings. Frankly, I don't understand why Conservatives don't get it... It's not really that difficult to figure out.

  6. WD: Single-payer, which takes healthcare decisions entirely away from the people and places them into the hands of the ruling elite (an unaccountable monopoly) is a fascist wet dream.

Thankfully, enough in Congress keep the public interest in mind, and it won't happen.

We need many more "payers", not just one.

If Obama wants more jobs, he should stop his efforts to block companies from hiring workers (In this example, a company has hired thousands of workers against the President's wishes).

  7. As usual Dmarks is being disingenuous and hateful towards labor.

The NLRB wants Boeing to live up to the terms of it's contract. Why do you want people to be able to lie and break their words Dmarks. Will you come up with another imaginary friend anecdote to answer?

And what HMO or health insurance provider do you have that lets you make your own medical decisions

I try hard to like everyone but you display are one of the most dishonest bloggers I've come across.

  8. I would like to see MORE insurance companies which would give more competition thus reducing costs. Also, I think doctors should be the ones making the final decision on what is covered or not.

I also think it's a darn shame that government is the culprit in placing red-tape and regulations which have caused prices to sky-rocket (not the only reason but a huge part) then they demonize the insurance companies as if they (gov't) are innocent of any interference. And then they act as if they are going to swoop in and "save" it. That's so disingenuous.

  9. That would be nice but we're still, most of us, at the mercy of whatever insurance company our employers choose.

Either way, what insurance company is going to let you pick your doctor and your treatment?

They are for profit companies and the bottom line will rule no matter how many sweet ads and brochures they put out.

Until we get a single payer system we are slaves no matter what spin Dmarks tries to put on it.

  10. Truth: Most companies are "for profit", that's why they're in business. I don't begrudge insurance companies making a buck, just don't gouge the heck out of me, and that goes for any company.

I don't want gov't telling insurance companies, or me, or my doctor what they can and can't do. And trust me, I don't like that the insurance companies have "charts" that say what's covered, either, but a lot of that has been determined by the gov't. Again, it SHOULD be the DOCTORS. They KNOW their patients best. The system is screwy, we know that, and it needed tweeked, we knew that too. But Obamacare is not the way.

I do like the no pre-existing conditons (unless someone is trying to defraud) that's a no brainer.

But the new taxes, regulations, health care commission...plus it doesn't even cover everyone, which was one of the MAIN selling points! **sigh** It's so frustrating because people like US could've come up with a much better solution/plan.

  11. Utilities are well regulated and nobody complains. Insurance companies must also be as they can be monopolies themselves.

Single payer would take care of all your concerns.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Truth: Well, you've never been in MY house when my electric bill comes in! I complain plenty. Especially now with ACT 129 costing me a king's ransom. Again, no problem with a company making a profit, but the regulation, red tape, and gov't bs trying to FORCE me to cut back my energy usage or pay through my nose is WRONG.

I could go with another "electric" company but I still have to pay Duq Light for the line usage as they own the line.

Now cell phones companies aren't as expensive. Why? Because there are SO many and they are all over the US. I can call a company outside of Pa to get a price and service. But for my electric and cable, it has to be within my area. And forget about getting a quote on water or sewage, I'm stuck with whom I've got, period.

Competition is the best thing in the market place, for ALL companies.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Competition that is fair and protects consumers from abuse through a system of sensible regulations is of course the best way.

I can talk about utilities all day long. How many sets of water and sewer and phone lines do you want in your community? that's why they're regulated monopolies. Cell phone lines are only restricted by tower location.

And because utilities put a premium on dividends to shareholders, which their executives enjoy, lower rates or infrastructure improvements come from rate hikes or bonds which lead to rate hikes. God forbid my shares of PPL pay me 4% instead of 5 because the company could use that money to lower your rates or upgrade infrastructure and equipment.

I am strongly in favor of labor and workers' rights. You are very wrong.

"Will you come up with another imaginary friend anecdote to answer?"

Name one imaginary anecdote I came up with.

I think you are the one who is hostile toward workers. Assuming you are right that there is a contract banning Boeing from opening new factories and hiring thousands of workers, you are opposed to the idea of them doing so. That's very anti-worker, anti-labor of you.

"Until we get a single payer system we are slaves no matter what spin Dmarks tries to put on it."

    1) What "spin" have I used? Be specific.

    2) Slavery has nothing to do with this issue.

    -----------
The simgle payer proposal IS one to make a monopoly.

Rational: I can see why you laugh. Beagle sounds sort of like Stalin at times. Submit completely to the government and all your worries are over.

Or his "1984-ish" claim that a company is being anti-labor when it seeks to open factories and hire thousands.
