The Transgender Bathroom Debate

I’ve been mulling over this new transgender bathroom law. I’m not a bigot nor am I afraid of the LGBT community. I’m an advocate of gay-marriage believing all people should be treated fairly and equally. I just don’t think permitting anyone in any bathroom, locker room or shower, regardless of the sex they were born, benefits our children.

My fear is a pedophile or some other type of unsavory person will use this law to try to hurt the most vulnerable in our society. The predators won’t even have to work or try (they don’t even have to disguise themselves) to commit a crime.  For example, a man with a bad plan on his mind can walk into a restroom, locker room or shower and there is no one to stop him—he will have every right to be there—and he could hurt someone.

I do realize our transgender population is less than one percent and we have an obligation to protect and help the minority. But what of the bad situations that could arise, not at the hands of the transgender community, but from the bad seeds in our society?

Again, it is not my fear that a transgender is going to commit a crime. I truly don’t have a problem sharing a bathroom with them. I have probably been in a restroom at one time or another with someone LGBT. And that’s fine.

But is it really a myth that a sexual predator will take advantage of this new law? I would say right now, we don’t know for sure.

What is your opinion on this?

  1. Minnesota settled this problem in 1975. They agreed to have "unisex" bathrooms. A rational compromise. I advise single use bathrooms. A little added charge for construction.
I agree with you. Especially when it comes to showering. That's nuts.

    1. That's unisex bathrooms along with men's and women's. Yes, three bathroom choices.

    2. Tom, that has been my contention. Have 3 bathrooms, as you said Minnesota did. I think that would be the safest and fairest thing to do.

  2. I lived in Paris France during he 1990s, where unisex bathrooms and beach nudity are commonplace. Only when something becomes FORBIDDEN do people take a lurid interest. This controversy is overblown and counterproductive -- it invites abuse because because it not a matter of routine.

    1. Octo, you do have a point about it being "forbidden". Just like alcohol in European countries--less alcohol problems there compared to here (from what I've read).
I don't know if this is counterproductive. I think we need to discuss these things--find the best solution. It's all the "hate" that spews which is counterproductive.

  3. In NC this law was never about the bathroom. There was no controversy until the state made one. And our legislators used it as a smokescreen to cover their real agenda because tucked in that law was several provisions, including one that would make it illegal for anyone in NC to sue their employer for discrimination - of any kind. Yeah, just our great Raleigh politicos pandering to big business.

    1. Rocky, it seems a lot of states have been leaning toward this and now that it's out in the open, so to speak, people are freaking out.
And of course Politics panders to big business, that's one of our greatest obstacles!
I don't think it's right to make it illegal to sue an employer, or a business or the government, for that matter. If true discrimination or dereliction is going on, it's needs to be exposed and punished.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Americans, especially conservative evangelical, are simply anal when it comes to issues such as this. The 3 bathroom solution is perfect.

    1. RN, I totally agree. And Target already had a 3rd bathroom, called the Family Restroom.
